This is beautiful, Shannon. Thank you. I really needed the reminder. God's love for ALL nations is one of the most important and valuable things I've learned at UNC. It completely changed my perspective.

What I gathered was that we as Christians must prepare ourselves to be ready for the time that Jesus comes for us. We have to be born again through saving faith in Jesus, and not be like the five virgins that "made things right" by getting more oil when he came. Even though they thought that they were associated with the true-believers (other five virgins), they will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven because one person's faith in Jesus cannot save another. The "Sir! Sir!" and "I don't know you" in verses 11 and 12 made me think about how Jesus condemned the false believers (when he was preaching the Sermon on the Mount) in last weeks reading, Matthew 7:21-23, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

The yeast that I have to be on my guard against would have to be certain individuals that attempted to break the relationship that I have with God. These individuals could be materialistic pastors (who mainly focus on coaxing people into believing that we should have all the riches in the world since we love God), nonbelievers (who might try to deny the existence of God with a series of "complex" arguments), and Satan (who tries to tempt people with evil in an attempt to steer them away from God). To remain faithful and to help avoid the yeast, we could listen to what Jesus said in Matthew 16:24-27,

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

By giving up everything to follow Jesus, we will have the ability to protect ourselves from the yeast that will try to break up our relationship.

zac, i think you nailed it. it's one of the oxymorons that are littered through God's word. there's no way we can earn enough money in our jobs to equal the treasure or to afford the pearls. we do nothing to put the treasure or the pearl in the spot to be found. but once we find it we have a choice. decide if our stuff is more valuable than a priceless treasure... or tell ourselves that we'd never be able to have enough to purchase it... or we could be wise and sell everything we have to buy what we could never afford. sometimes that everything is tough. it might include family heirlooms... or the first thing you bought with your own paycheck... or... regardless, it can be tough. but in comparison to the TREASURE it all pales. i just hope we all see the TREASURE for the treasure He is.

In regards to Matthew 13:44-45 in which Jesus discussed the merchant who sought fine pearls, (not to be cheesy) I feel like the pearl was free and it cost the man everything he had. I say this because the pearl is the acceptance of Jesus as your savior, and to an extent, it is free because we can choose to accept it. On the other hand it could cost us everything because for us to follow and accept Jesus, we HAVE to give up everything to follow him. It's exactly what we touched on in the Men's and Women's Bible Study last night: God's Heart for the Nations; Dean mentioned that we HAVE to be willing to give up everything to follow Jesus. In Matthew 16:24, Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." Jesus is our pearl and we have to give up everything to follow him.
